As we have officially entered June, this usually means that around 90% of our favourite television programs are on summer hiatus.
In honour of that, I have put a list about my favourite series airing over the summer period for us television aficionados.
Here’s my eligibility criteria:
. Only series airing new episodes between May 30th and August 31st allowed
. Netflix series are allowed, but new episodes must have been released during the period advised above
. There must be at least 3 new episodes remaining to be eligible on this list
So let’s dive into my favourites (FYI- very light spoilers ahead if you’re not caught up on some of there series)...
Season 4 Premiere Date: June 17th
The Affair was kind of a hot mess in season 3.
The plot revolved too much around Noah for my liking, and confusingly introduced a 5th narrative perspective with the French woman (frankly I can’t remember her name).
The season finale felt much like a series finale, and a very disappointing one at that, with the episode wasting half of it’s time on this French woman none of us cared for, and the other half somehow attempting to humanise Noah (that was really the focus of the whole season) and setting him up for his path to redemption and growing from his self-destructive white male privileged behaviour. I was shocked and disappointed that Cole, and especially not Alison, had no screen time in the season finale.
However, I’m 100% on board for season 4.
I actually didn’t start watching The Affair until February of this year, which luckily for me meant I had three seasons to catch up on once and I didn’t have to wait too long for the fourth season release date. Despite being a late to join the band wagon of obsession over this gripping drama, I quickly became invested in these characters. The acting is brilliant, the performances are outstanding, and despite an underwhelming third season, the fourth season trailer has convinced me that I should stick around to see what’s going to happen.
Season 5 Release Date: July 1st
If you scroll through my blog around the time I created it last August/September, you’ll notice that I gave my fair amount of shoutouts to this brilliant series.
The basic premise of the series follows the operations behind a notorious drug cartel and each participant’s quest for power, and it let’s the viewers side into the law enforcement agents trying to bring it down and their own thirst for power. You can expect plenty of corruption, drama, violence, heartbreak, love, betrayal, and nail-biting scenes.
The cast all pull their own weight with Emmy-award worthy performances, and the series deserves credit in casting actors of colour from diverse backgrounds, while equally developing each character past the stereotype glass ceiling Hollywood likes to keep them in.
If you’re in the UK, the series will be airing the new episodes weekly on Netflix!
Unbreakable, Kimmy Schmidt
Season 4, Part 1 Release Date: May 30th
We officially have entered the final season of Unbreakable, Kimmy Schmidt…which as much as I’m sad over, I also appreciate when a series doesn’t over extend it’s welcome and succumbs to recycling plot lines for the sake of it
If I gave you the basic premise of Kimmy Schmidt- a woman who was kidnapped in her teens and trapped with three other women in a bunker for 15 years by a reverend who convinced them the outside world was destroyed by the apocalypse and he had saved them, and then had to deal with living in the real world once she was rescued- you might find it difficult to believe that I was telling you about Netflix’s most feel-good, heart-warming, and hilarious comedy to date.
Each season, Kimmy and the gang manage to deliver whimsical performances that equally have viewers in stitches over laughter, all whilst revolving storylines that at it’s core are very dark and tragic, but nonetheless should be talked about.
I’ve already finished watching the first half of season 4 (6 episodes, the rest will be released in January 2019), and I’ll admit this season has been the best of them all (and that’s saying a lot). There is a whole episode this season set up as a documentary, and it’s brilliant and everything you could have ever hoped for from this series.
Friends from College
Season 2 Release Date: TBD
This kind of goes against my criteria for eligibility as the season 2 release date for this Netflix dramedy has yet to be announced, but we know season 2 is officially happening, and I’d like to think that it will be released before September considering season 1 aired in July of last year.
Friends from College is a series you either loved or despised when it first came out. The call the reviews from critics lukewarm would be generous, and the buzz on social media and the blogosphere probably leaned itself more on the nay to yay scale.
Clearly, I fell on the yay side, and the end of the yay scale at that.
It seems like many people didn’t like this series due to it’s self-destructive and generally unlikeable characters, and I made a whole case against why that doesn’t bother me here.
A season 2 was unexpected, but very welcome by viewers like myself who were rooting for the show.
I look forward to the second series and all the hilarity and ridiculousness I’m sure that will come with it.
Airing Final Episode on June 15th
Each time a new episode of CW’s Life Sentence airs, I become more disappointed over the fact that it has been cancelled.
When news of it’s cancellation hit, it wasn’t shocking and I wasn’t necessarily gutted, but as we approach the end of one-season wonder I’m finding that I am genuinely going to miss having this series to look forward to on a weekly basis.
Life Sentence follows the life of Stella Abbott, a woman in her early 20’s who is cured from cancer after having been given a terminal diagnosis, and she now needs to face each day as if it weren’t her last and take responsibility for her actions.
The show feels very nice and feel-good, despite following the lives of a very dysfunctional family who are often in denial about their self-destructive choices.
If you haven’t watched this yet, I highly recommend you catch up on the 13 episode series.
Once the show wraps up next week, I’ll also be sharing some of my own fan fiction of what would happen to Stella and Co. if it’s universe had been granted another season.
The Real Housewives of New York City
Airing new episodes up until August 2018 (probably)
No confirmation of how many episodes the decade big apple franchise is having this season, but if past is any indication, the season will probably have 22 episodes including three reunion episodes (10 episodes have aired already).
This season of RHONY has been jam-packed with all the ridiculous drama you could hope for from a reality television show. Moreover, it feels natural and like the storylines are natural versus forced for desperation of ratings (looking at you RHOBH).
Most of the women of NYC have known each other for well over 10 years, and have developed genuine relationships with each other that are believable. The chemistry from this group of women is unmatched by any other series, and even with all the chaos and shouting that ensues every season, we are always treated to a fair dose of hilarity and comedic moments to tone down all the incomprehensible shouting.
The best/most hilarious moments of the season so far:
. Sonja saying she’s vegan but allows herself to eat shellfish because it’s raw
. Luann’s reaction to Bethenny calling her a loser, and perhaps the funniest one-liner/comeback ever: ‘If I’m a loser, the rest of the world sucks’
Airing new episodes every day until the end of July (probably)
Alright everyone, I’m not even going to try to justify this show. It is trash. Pure trash.
That being said, it’s great for pure escapism.
Below Deck Med
Airing new episodes until August 2018 (Probably)
The yachtie reality show Below Deck spin-off is going strong as it takes over the Mediterranean for a third season.
Orange is the New Black
Season 6 Release Date: July 27th
OINTB has passed it’s half a decade mark, and in just over a month from now we’ll be back at Litchfield Penitentiary after that jaw dropping finale in season 5 that left many people’s lives in question, and split up half the inmates by sending them to another prison.
Million dollar Listing New York
Season 7 Release Date: June 12th
I never thought that i would become interested in a show about reality show about real estate, or anything slightly similar to it.
However, there’s something efforttlessly charming and entertaining about the three real estate moguls (Eklund, Gold, and Serhant) and checking out the insane real estate prices of New York City (which somehow are still much cheaper than London).
